The new immigration law will enable foreign investors to obtain stay permits with greater ease by reducing the minimum stay time required to obtain the permit.

A new law on immigration was passed on Thursday at a plenary session of the House of Representatives, replacing the outdated 1992 Law on Immigration.

According to Law and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar, those investing in Indonesia will be granted more ease given that they fulfill all requirements.

"Permanent residency permits can be given to investors who have stayed in Indonesia consecutively for three years," he said Thursday.

This period is considerably less than the minimum of five years set out under the previous law, he said.

"In this way, it is hoped that a conducive climate for investment is created and that this will attract more investors to put their funds in Indonesia," he said.
