The Law and Human Rights Ministry will take a leading role in matters related to immigration under a new law passed by the House on Thursday.

The House of Representatives passed the immigration bill on Thursday.

Fahri Hamzah, a legislator from the House’s Commission III that oversees the law, said that the ministry would be the "leading sector for immigration functions".

Meanwhile, Law and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar said his ministry would be responsible for managing immigration-related work.

But, the directorate general of immigration will conduct all immigration processes, he said.

The directorate general of immigration is also granted autonomy to conduct its work, which includes having the authority to conduct investigations on immigration-related cases, the minister said.

"[Immigration] will coordinate with the police and hand in dossiers to the police," he added.
